Your Consultation Appointment

Before your first visit, you will be asked to complete an intake form to document your personal and medical history, prior surgeries, medications, and allergies.

At your visit we will review your goals and concerns. We will also want to learn more specifically about any prior facial procedures you have had performed. We will examine your overall face and neck from various angles. We use a special mirror to show you how you appear to others. We will also take photographs that will be used to plan your surgery and track your progress after. You will have a chance to review these images and discuss the plan with Dr. Pourtaheri prior to surgery.

As the face ages your fat and skin thins allowing gravity to make it sag and wrinkle. This process also leads to hollowness along the cheekbones and around the mouth with inappropriate fullness in other areas such as the jowls.

A facelift involves camouflaged incisions made along the hairline, sideburns, and around the ear to correct signs of aging and tighten the skin around the eyes, cheeks, corner of the mouth, jawline, and even the neck. A combination of facelift and fat grafting can provide the most effective means of rejuvenation in older patients, while in younger patients, fat grafting and laser treatments may be enough to ward off the signs of aging. It is important to let us know about any history of smoking or vascular problems if seeking a facelift.

The incisions and plane in which the facelift is performed can vary from surgeon to surgeon and patient to patient. Generally, deeper planes and longer incisions may need to be tightened to provide a more dramatic and longer-lasting correction in older patients, while smaller incisions and shallower planes are all that may be needed in younger patients.

Dr. Pourtaheri may combine your facelift with facial fat grafting or injectable fillers to add volume to the cheeks or sides of the face. For a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation, a brow lift, eyelid rejuvenation, and neck lift / liposuction may be performed at the same time as your facelift.

Facelift Recovery

After the operating room, you will be taken to a recovery area to be cared for. You will go home the same day or recover in a hotel if you have traveled in from out of town. You may have a mask, bandages, a jaw bra, or drains that should be kept in place. Drains generally come out 1 to 2 days after surgery, while the mask and other bandages may be kept in place for 1 to 2 weeks.

Antibiotics are generally given on the day of surgery but not after surgery. We also prescribe pain medications to limit discomfort. Blood pressure medications may be added to minimize problems after surgery if your blood pressure ran high during the procedure or in recovery. You will receive after-care instructions before and after your surgery and have plenty of time to ask questions.

After surgery, you may have bruising, swelling, and soreness that will gradually go away. It is best to sleep with your head elevated on 2 or more pillows and not strain yourself for 2 weeks to reduce swelling. We may ask that you apply cold compresses to the area for 24 hours to further reduce swelling and bruising. Regular walking is encouraged to prevent blood clots, starting the morning after surgery.

We generally like to check on you in person the day after surgery. We will otherwise call and plan to see you in 8 to 10 days after surgery. We will schedule additional visits to check on your healing progress, which can be done virtually if you live out of town.

Healing takes time. Most patients feel comfortable socializing after 2 weeks. The bulk of the swelling resolves within a few weeks. Your face will continue to make gradual changes and your final results may take several months to be fully evident.
