As with any elective cosmetic surgery, active smokers should avoid these procedures until you have quit smoking for at least 4 weeks, as the risk of wound healing complications is much higher and not worth it.

Your Consultation Appointment

Before your first visit, you will be asked to complete an intake form to document your personal and medical history, prior surgeries, medications, and allergies. At your visit we will review your goals and concerns. We will also want to learn more specifically about any prior body procedures you have undergone including less-invasive procedures like liposuction and non-surgical fat destruction (i.e. CoolSculpting, radio frequency / EMsculpt).

You may bring in photos of other people’s bodies that you like to help us understand your goals. Try to select photos of people with a similar overall frame to yours.

We will examine your body from various angles to ensure we take into account the surrounding areas to maximize your body appearance after surgery. We will also take photographs that will be used to help plan your surgery and track your progress after. You will have a chance to review these images and discuss the plan with us prior to surgery.

More about Abdominoplasty

Not everyone is a candidate for a tummy tuck, particularly if most of your fat is intra-abdominal (inside your abdomen around the guts). The best candidate for a tummy tuck is someone who has loose skin and excess fat in the lower abdomen / flanks and abdominal muscles that are not being pushed out by intra-abdominal fat. Having children can lead to a gap between your abdominal muscles and contribute to a bulge known as rectus diastasis, or even a hernia. These are problems that may be able to be repaired at the time of your tummy tuck.

The extent of your incision will depend on how much skin we remove. At B.A.E. we ask that you bring in some of your favorite undergarments or bathing suits in order to place your scar in an area that will be well-hidden by them. We like to place the scar as low as reasonably possible, sometimes as low as the groin crease to avoid visible scars across your abdomen. If you have a C-section scar we may be able to remove it with a tummy tuck. If you had other open abdominal surgeries with scars higher up on the abdomen, we change the way we perform your tummy tuck to keep things safe. While removing excess abdominal skin/fat, we may have the opportunity to reshape and reposition your belly button as well.

In addition to tightening the abdominal muscles, removing excess skin and fat, and repositioning the belly button, most patients benefit from circumferential or 360 liposuction. We use a SAFE liposuction technique to help remove additional areas of fat in the abdomen, flanks, and lower back to give you a tapered and better defined midsection.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

After the operating room, you will be taken to a recovery area to be cared for. You may go home the same day or recover in the hospital if you have extensive work done or prefer to stay. You will have a supportive garment and perhaps other supportive dressings. We may offer longer-acting numbing medications to help speed up your recovery. We let you start showering the next day and most patients can return to work 1 to 2 weeks after surgery.

Antibiotics are generally given on the day of surgery and are given after surgery in some patients. After surgery, you will have bruising and soreness for several days. Some patients may need temporary drains placed to help remove any excess fluid. If you had a rectus-plication (tightening of your abdominal muscles) or hernia repair at the same time, you can be sore for longer. Regular walking is encouraged to prevent blood clots, starting the morning after surgery. It helps to limit strenuous exercise or high-impact activities for 1 to 2 weeks.

We generally like to check on you in person the week after surgery. We will schedule additional visits to check on your healing progress, which can be done virtually if you live out of town. Healing takes time and your body shape will continue to improve over the next several months as you wear your compression garments. You will receive after-care instructions before and after your surgery and have plenty of time to ask questions.
